Restriction Plates

A restriction plate is never a sign on its own — it’s a small rectangular plate mounted directly below a full sign, narrowing exactly when, to whom, or under what condition that sign’s rule actually applies. Miss the plate, and you’ll misread the sign above it as stricter (or looser) than it really is.

P 60 MIN

How to read it: the sign above says “No Parking.” The plate below it says “60 MIN.” Together, they mean: you may park here, but only for up to 60 minutes — the plate has converted a full prohibition into a time-limited allowance. Read the sign and its plate as one instruction, never separately.

Time-based plates

Narrow a sign to specific hours or days.

Parking-specific plates

Turn a “no parking” sign into a limited or paid allowance.

Vehicle and access qualifiers

Restrict a sign to a mass, engine size, or type of access.

A correction worth knowing: while researching this category, three signs that look like they belong here — the two “yield to horse riders” signs and the three “direction arrow” signs — turned out to actually be full standalone regulatory signs, not plates. They’re covered on the Regulatory Signs page instead.
